Shearing training course on offer
PEOPLE interested in learning the art of shearing sheep get the opportunity to learn the basics later this month when Elite Shearer Training Ltd offer a four day training programme in Gisborne.
The programme runs from May 20 to May 23 and will be headed by former World champion shearer Tom Wilson and instructor Bill Hale from Waipukurau.
“Elite Shearer Training was started up two years ago due to lack of actual hands on training that had been offered by various entities over the past four years.” Mr Wilson said.
“This was due to difficulty in securing enough direct funding to support a training model that would suit the needs of the shearing and woolhandling industry.”
He said that Elite Shearer Training currently work on a “user pays” system and deliver a training model that fits the needs of the industry at the present time. Tom will be joined by experienced industry training stalwart Gavin Rowland and Dion Morrell, a former World record holder.
“We are presently working in conjunction with the New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association to try and access and secure a level of funding that will sustain ongoing training to the wool sector in the foreseeable future.
“We have experienced trainers based in most regions of New Zealand and can take trainees from learner right through to World Class competition level,” Mr Wilson said.
Shearing and woolhandling courses start at school level with an introductory course that will introduce the students to the wool industry in general, and the opportunities that are available to them.
“This progresses to learner, then on to junior, intermediate and senior levels.
“Courses are run in a woolshed over 3–4 days, and on completion of courses all students who achieve the standard set, are issued with colour coded, Elite Shearer Training National Certificates.
“Blue being Learner, Red Junior, Green Intermediate and Gold being the Senior level. We therefore have a training ‘Pathway to Gold’.”
