New evacuation warning for Matata to Tolaga Bay

A New tsunami evacuation notice has been issued.

It follows a magnitude 8 earthquake near the Kermadec Islands.

People near coast from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay, and Great Barrier Island must move immediately to nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible, National Emergency Management Agency tweeted at 8.45am.

This warning is separate to this morning's earlier warning, what was since cancelled.

A NEMA mobile alert issued said the earthquake had resulted in a large tsunami that will impact on New Zealand.

"This could be a life-threatening surge" of water bringing debris.

    Should Gisborne evacuate??

Footnote from Ed: The tsunami warning issued at 9.45am said there was no need to evacuate south of Tolaga Bay at that stage.
However, Gisborne is under a beach and marine tsunami warning, to stay off the beaches and out of the water.
The tsunami threat north of Tolaga Bay was lifted at 1.27pm. People are still advised to stay off beaches and shore areas, and not to go sightseeing.
