Fun comes in twos
MAZDA prides itself on making driving fun and one of the best chances you have to get into the Japanese car maker’s long list of highly-desirable vehicles is the Mazda 2 GLX hatch which, to coin a phrase, drives as good as it looks.
This little hornet gets its power from a SKYACTIV 1.5 litre petrol engine, with maximum power of 81kW at 6000 rpm and best torque of 141Nm at 4000 rpm. With a body weight of 1050kg, that is plenty to make the Mazda 2 a real performer.
The presence of features like iStop, which turns off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, and the efficiency of the six-speed automatic transmission means it is not sucking up much fuel.
The official consumption figure is a very pleasing 4.9 litres/100kms.
To make that drive experience even more fun there is the sport mode transmission option that allows keen drivers to make their own selections.
The GLX comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, halogen headlights, power exterior mirrors with side turn lamps and power windows.
There is air conditioning and cruise control for your comfort, as well as Bluetooth phone connectivity and a four-speaker audio system that is operated through the steering wheel controls, while the wheel itself is telescopic and tilt adjustable.
Add to that front passenger seat height adjustment, and keyless entry and ignition.
One big feature of the Mazda 2 range is the i-Active safety advanced smart city brake support system.
This high-tech goodie works at speeds of 4kmh to 80kmh, monitoring the vehicle or pedestrian in front to assess the likelihood of a collision.
If a high risk is detected, it issues visible and audio warnings and primes the brakes for a faster response. If the driver does not brake, the system will brake automatically.
The Mazda 2 GLX hatch also has hill launch assist, an emergency stop signal and an engine immobiliser for an all-round top-class package.
Mazda provides three years scheduled servicing, a five-year warranty and five-year roadside assistance.
On the road, the Mazda 2 GLX hatch is a dream to drive, with light steering and high agility and manoeuvrability in traffic.
The Mazda 2 GLX sits right up there with the top superminis on the road — lively and, as the brochure says, fun to drive.
