Festival best from young performers
Tuesday, November 20, 2012
THE Turanganui Schools Maori Cultural Festival swung into action yesterday with powerful and adorable performances by young performers.
The annual event is “bigger and better” than previous years, with 74 school groups taking part in the five-day event at Showgrounds Park Event Centre.
This year’s finale will feature the biggest mass performance to date, with more than 1000 children taking part.
The performance is on Friday at 1pm.
Another festival highlight will be a performance by all the students of Gisborne Intermediate School.
Kaiti Kindergarten’s performance today, a tribute to their teacher Glenda Gibbs who passed away last month, brought tears to many eyes in the audience.
Mrs Gibbs was well known in the community for her art and environmental interests.
She also worked at Awapuni School for 11 years.
Night performances will be trialled on Wednesday, with two hours of free entertainment available for people unable to attend the daytime shows.
