Volunteers plant 100 trees in trails park
A PROJECT to beautify the Whataupoko Park trails could become a regular event.

One hundred trees were planted on Saturday at the Fox Street entrance to the Gisborne District Council-owned park, known for its walking and mountain biking trails.

Organiser Jacqueline Jukes said one volunteer who regularly walked the trails told her it was nice to be able to say he was part of it now, after helping plant some trees.

She said this was just the beginning and it was hoped there would be more native tree plantings at the park in the near future, with plans to adopt small areas to plant each year.

“We managed to get all the trees in and we were very lucky with the weather, as rain the day before meant the ground was nice and soft to dig.

“I’m pleased with the effort and all the people who came along to lend a hand.”

About 25 volunteers mucked in to plant the trees donated by the Women’s Native Tree Project.
