Creative young minds portraying peace through art
ART pieces for peace, selected as the best in Gisborne, will be judged alongside the top works in New Zealand then possibly the world.

The annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest this year attracted 350,000 entries from 200 countries, including 72 from Gisborne.

Artist and competition judge Graham Mudge selected Campion College student Alistair Gordon and Tabitha Edwards from Ilminster Intermediate School as the local winners.

The competition, which encourages intermediate-age children to consider the value of peace and portray it through art, delivered high standards of work, said Gisborne Wainui Lions’ Club peace poster co-ordinator Ray Thomas.

Imagine Peace was the 2012 theme.

“Each year a theme incorporating peace is chosen,” he said. “Participants use a variety of mediums to convey this theme and create unique works to express their life experiences and culture.”

Alistair and Tabitha won an award and art supply vouchers. Their entries have been sent to Wellington for national judging. The best in the country will be sent to the United States for international judging.

Alistair’s picture portrays the dove — the international symbol of peace — a child in prayer and battle scenes.

“It shows how war affects everyone, including children, and how this can be very horrific as it leaves you with bad memories,” he said.

His vision of peace is one free from the horrors of war.

Zhongjun Luo’s work was placed second among the Campion College entries.

Tabitha used soft pastel hues to express peace in her calm and relaxing landscape scene.

Her creation was chosen from 60 Ilminster Intermediate entries. Tamaaio Stewart was runner-up.

“It is a great opportunity for our students to explore their understanding of peace while also exploring art,” said Tabitha’s teacher Keren Florence.
