Hunt for armed man after shot
A MAN is still on the loose after a shooting in a Mangapapa suburban street yesterday afternoon.

The Gisborne CIB is looking for Warren Jacques Tarawa.

The 33-year-old is described by police as dangerous and not to be approached, as it is believed he is still in possession of the firearm used in the incident.

Police believe he is a resident of Huxley Road in Kaiti.

About 2.30pm yesterday, police say a maroon-coloured Toyota Lucida ‘‘people mover’’ arrived at a house in Stout Street near Sheridan Street.

The front passenger presented what was believed to be a .22 rifle at the occupants.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott said at least one shot was believed to have been discharged in the direction of the occupants before the vehicle left.

“None of the occupants at the address, which included two children aged 15 and 17 months of age, were injured. However, a projectile has hit a car parked on the property.”

The armed offenders squad (AOS) cordoned off Huxley Road for almost four hours yesterday looking for the two men, the car and the firearm used in the incident.

One man was arrested but the other man, Tarawa, is now listed as wanted.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts are asked to contact Gisborne police on 06 869 0200 or call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The vehicle was found at a property in Huxley Road as members of the AOS searched a number of houses. A 33-year-old man, believed to be the driver, was arrested.

He appeared in Gisborne District Court this morning charged as a party to the unlawful discharge of the firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Det Snr Sgt Scott said bail was opposed.

The timing of the AOS callout coincided with the end of the school day and many students in the Kaiti area were unable to return to their homes until the cordon was lifted about 6.30pm.
