The finest fleeces
FLEECES at the Poverty Bay A&P Show wool room this year were as good as any in the country, says judge and retired wool expert Graham Roddick from Hawke’s Bay.

It was third-time-lucky for Mr Roddick who has tried to get here to judge the Gisborne wool for the past three years.

In 2010 he couldn’t get through because of flooding, then last year he ended up in hospital at Show time. He was delighted to make it this year.

“It is always a pleasure to come and judge good wool,” he said.

The fleeces were well-grown.

“Possibly stronger and longer than previous years because the sheep have had such a good growing season.”

Some of the top fleeces have been sent to the Hawke’s Bay Show this weekend.

Wool room head steward Ross Buscke, who has been in charge for the last 41 years, said he had plenty of good feedback about the wool room this year.

“People said it was the best ever.

“I told them it’s a bit like good wine or whisky — it just gets better with age.”
