Saanen reigns supreme
BEST dairy goat in show went to Gisborne breeder Raewyn Bruce for the second consecutive year.

Her four-year-old Saanen doe Acacia won supreme champion of the Poverty Bay A&P Show dairy goat section as well as champion doe, and the kidded doe in milk (3 years and under five years) section.

A stalwart of the Gisborne show dairy goat section, Mrs Bruce has been showing her goats here and at other North Island shows for the past 31 years.

She won the top prize last year too, with then-five-year-old Saanen doe Janelle.

“Saanen are a very passive goat and the does are generally better milkers,” said Mrs Bruce.

“I usually go to other shows in the North Island but the past couple of years have focused just on Gisborne — which has one of the bigger goat sections in the country.”

Octogenarian Galatea breeder Ron Chynoweth’s top buck Ferncrest Joboy advanced to grand champion status at the Gisborne show after winning its tenth successful champion challenge.

Mr Chynoweth, who has been breeding stud goats since 1982, said at 80 this would be his last show out of town so it was good to finish on a high note.

Head steward Dennis Weatherall said with 75 dairy goats entered and just a few scratchings, the goat section the Poverty Bay Show continued its reputation of offering one of the largest goat entries in the North Island, if not the country.

This year also pooled a large doe kid class with about eight individual kids and nine does in the best udder class, he said.

Four out of five breeds were represented at this year’s show and although the Saanen dominated several classes, there was also representation from Toggenburg, Nubian and Alpine breeds this year.

Gisborne breeder Heather Weatherall noted there was also a particularly large number of Nubians at this year’s show.
