Top dogs in first time at Show
A FIRST-TIME entrant and his champion dog had a near-perfect final run to take top honours at the Gisborne A&P Spring Show Tux Yarding Challenge.

All the way from Northland, Pete Campbell and his bitch Dime impressed spectators with their smooth run shifting three sheep through several obstacles before penning them.

Campbell and eight-year-old heading bitch Dime are no strangers to regular success, including the New Zealand short head title at the national championships in Hawke’s Bay in 2009.

Campbell said he thought his final run went “reasonably well” and he knew he was in with a good chance. “But you can never be certain.”

Campbell was one of three Northlanders, with a team of 12 dogs, who competed in Gisborne for the first time in an event that doubles as a qualifying round for the Tux National Yarding Challenge in January.

Gisborne competition organiser Rod Mead was pleased with the trial that attracted more than 220 entries from all over the North Island.

Once again the sheep provided by Rangatira Station were brilliant and he appreciated the efforts by Farmers Transport in transporting them to and from the Show over the four days.

Without sponsors the competition could not go ahead and it was great Hains cattle and sheep stud breeding had become a major sponsor this year.

Mr Mead said the increasing number of novices taking part was heartening.

“When I first started we only had three novices and they took first, second and third every odd year . . . this year there were more than 20 novices.

“The only thing really worrying me is the amount of girls coming through,” he said.
