Double clears put Coupe and Claire top of the class
PERFECT conditions made for plenty of top-notch equestrian action on the opening day of the Spring Show yesterday.

Premier jump of the day was the 1.4m horse, which was a battle between New Zealand’s leading female riders.

Six of the starting field came back for the jump-off, including former Olympian and World Champs representative Samantha McIntosh (Cambridge) with her imported mare Estina and her new ride Claire, along with her World Champs teammate Katie McVean (Mystery Creek) who also had two in Dunstan Delilah and Dunstan Kiwi Iron Mark. Rounding out the jump-off were the very in-form Lisa Coupe (Kumeu) who already has two grand prix victories to her credit for the season with My Ocean Wave and Catherine Cameron aboard Campione GNZ.

McIntosh was second to go and set a cracking pace, coming home double clear in 36.49 seconds. McVean and Iron Mark could not match it, and picked up eight faults. Then came Cameron who was double clear, but in 42.51.

Coupe had nothing to lose, and made it look easy aboard her big bay, coming home double clear in 35.11. McIntosh, who already had second place secure, did not push the leggy chestnut Claire and was double clear in 40.28.

Earlier in the Show, former Gisborne rider Luke Dee (Ocean Beach) won the 1.3m horse jump aboard Ombudsman.

All of those top riders will be chasing victory in the big class of the Show, The Gisborne Herald Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon.

Results: Open horse 1.4m: Lisa Coupe (Kumeu) My Ocean Wave 1, Samantha McIntosh (Cambridge) Estina 2, Samantha McIntosh (Cambridge) Claire 3. Open horse 1.3m: Luke Dee (Ocean Beach) Ombudsman 1, Katie McVean (Mystery Creek) Dunstan Springfield 2, Catherine Cameron (Cambridge) Lights Out 3.
