Ashwood Estate wins best chardonnay trophy
GISBORNE wine label Ashwood Estate has been named as having the best chardonnay in the country after being awarded the Treasury Wines Estates Champion Chardonnay trophy at the 2012 New Zealand International Wine Show on Saturday night.

Earlier this month the Gisborne label’s 2010 Chardonnay won its first gold medal for its class at the show before going up for the trophy award.

The Gisborne wine was described on the awards website as “classy”.

Showing that Gisborne can produce “world class” brands and products was the drive behind Ashwood Estate and its success, said estate manager Richard Burke.

“Getting a gold medal was huge but winning the trophy is an outstanding result.

“It all stems from a passionate drive to capture the best of Gisborne,” he said.

“The district has been through some tough times and we need more really strong brands and products to come out of Gisborne.

“The Ashwood Estate brand is really about producing something that Gisborne can put out there as a world class product.”

There were 25 gold medallists competing for the trophy and Ashwood was up against some strong contenders for the top award.

“To win in that company was pretty special,” said Mr Burke.

Mr Burke was at the presentation, along with winemaker Steve Voysey, to receive the trophy at the Crown Plaza in Auckland on Saturday night.

Mr Burke said there was a passionate team behind the project, including LeaderBrand owner Murray McPhail.

“He is a huge supporter of the Gisborne district and has invested a lot of money, time and expertise into the region,” said Mr Burke.

“This result will be well celebrated across the region and in various parts of the world.”
