Prime ewes slip a little
THE rain has cropping farmers and pastoralists all smiling and also praying it will continue for a day or so, but it made little difference to the sale of 589 sheep at Matawhero.

Those vendors who faced the market would have been quite happy with the results.

Surprisingly, and bucking the trend, prime ewe values slipped by $3 to $5 per head, $80.50 the highest bid and $78.50, the lowest, with pen after pen knocked down at $80. Only 23 lambs were in the prime section — one very large individual sold at $126 and the rest made $100-$118.

Just 215 store lambs did not take long to sell but those with some size went well. The bigger ones made $100-$110 with a couple of small lines going at $95 and $97.

An attractive line of 70 well-bred ewe lambs from Waitangi Terrace Station looked sound buying at $100.

Ewes with lambs drew spirited bidding — a line of 134 ewes and 191 docked lambs from Nicks Head Station were sold at $56 all-counted. Another small lot from Hinenui Station made $53. Relative to prime ewe prices, store ewes also sold well, most making $60-$72 with one extra solid lot fetching $90.

Sales included:

Male lambs: L.M.J. White Partnership 16 at $110, 12 at $101.50.

Ewe lambs: Waitangi Terrace Station 70 at $100.

Mixed-sex lambs; Opiki Station 28 at $95, 39 at $86; Poko Poko Station 36 at $97, 10 at $58.

Ewes with lambs: Nicks Head Station 134/191 at $56; Hinenui Station 7/11 at $53.

Next Tuesday’s cattle fair of 1400 head should benefit from the rain which has been falling across much of the North Island.
