Magpies scalp motivates Bay
RUGBY - A SHOCK win over Hawke’s Bay was perfect motivation for Poverty Bay heading into the Hurricanes under-16 tournament in Wellington, starting on Monday.

T he Bay side, coached by Kahu Falaoa, are in the B division of the tournament alongside Wanganui, Horowhenua-Kapiti, Wairarapa-Bush, East Coast and Wellington B.

A 61-0 whitewash of East Coast in a game which doubled as a Hurricanes u16 tournament clash, was followed by a 21-12 upset of the Magpies, who are playing in the A division.

“We were definitely the underdogs,” said Poverty Bay manager Dave Grogan. “But by halftime and in front of a large parochial home crowd at Tremain Field (Napier), we were leading 16-0, from a Jacob Leaf try converted by Lewis Makowharemahihi-Kingi and three penalty kicks from Baxter Mackay, including one from the halfway line.

Hawke’s Bay scored a converted try but Poverty Bay responded with a try to James Grogan to push the score out to 21-7.

The home side closed the gap with an unconverted try but Poverty Bay held on for a massive upset against a side who lost 24-21 to Bay of Plenty, beat A division side Manawatu 67-40 and Wanganui 50-7.

“Motivation before the game was that very few Poverty Bay players get the opportunity to knock over the big boys but we believed that this group of boys had the ability to win,” Grogan said.

Players to stand out for Poverty Bay were Scott Tallott, Drew Martin, Korey Love and Baxter Mackay in the backs and James Grogan, Issac Hikawai and Isaia Leawere-Walker in the forwards.

The Poverty Bay team are picked from Waikohu, Lytton, Campion and Gisborne Boys’ High, which, once again provided the bulk of the players.

“After the team is picked they are put through two weeks of rigorous training,” Grogan said.
