Peas poppin’ up all over
Wednesday, September 26, 2012
GISBORNE pea plants can be seen sprouting throughout the district at the moment.
One of the local paddocks showing the first signs of growth belongs to Henry Dods, left.
Cedenco has pea plants throughout the region including Wairoa and ideally the first peas would have been planted in July, but saturated ground made it impossible for tractors to work the land without getting stuck.
Almost half the amount of last year was being planted this year because last year’s crop was so plentiful that Cedenco still has some in stock.
Some peas will be harvested in mid-November and many paddocks will then be planted with sweetcorn.
Cedenco’s Mark Robertson, right, and Mr Dods were out in the paddocks checking on the progress last week.
