Freeing up spots for freedom camping
OVERNIGHT camping would be allowed at Midway Beach, the Marina carpark and at Makorori Beach in a proposed new freedom camping bylaw that will come before Gisborne District Council on Thursday.

The proposed bylaw would bring the council’s existing rules into line with the new Freedom Camping Act that came into force a year ago, regulatory services manager Sarwan Kumar told the council.

People camping at the three new sites would need a self-contained vehicle.

The bylaw would incorporate three additional areas for freedom camping —at Rere, subject to DoC approval, Rangitukia and Tuparoa.

However, two existing areas — Waipiro Bay and Kaiaua, were now not classified as common marine and coastal areas under the Marine and Coastal Area Act, he said.

The areas were not capable of being used for freedom camping as they were not local authority area. Staff had applied to the Minister of Conservation to allow the council to manage these areas.

The same request had been for the Rangitukia and Tuparoa areas, he said.

If approved by the council, the proposed bylaw will be put out for public consultation.

Other items on the council agenda for Thursday include the vesting of waahi tapu land at Awapuni Park to the Rongowhakaata Iwi Trust for 10 cents, the adoption of the annual report for 2011/12 financial year, a rates remission policy, maintenance of cattle stops on council roads — a long-term problem that has been causing considerable angst for some rural property owners — and tenders for a new water ring main in the western industrial area.

The opening statement should have read "Overnight parking of self-contained campers and motorhomes..." not "camping".
This gives a picture of a lineup of tents....
