It’s hair-raising but a good cause
FIVE bold champions from Elgin School have gone bald to raise funds for CanTeen.

More than $1000 was raised by the school, which principal Fiona Morice says is a fantastic achievement.

Teacher Normanda Campbell, teacher aide Maringiwai Raynon, student Ngametua Cumming, parent Honey Cooper and Roimata Keepa-Tibble the daughter of Ms Morice, were the stars of the event.

“It was an awesome day. It was great to see our parents supporting the kaupapa and taking part in the event. Roimata is loving having no hair and is thinking about keeping it off.

“When I saw her without her hair, I got a fright. But after the initial shock, I noticed how nicely-shaped her head was.”

Tresses taken for the fundraising initiative will be used to make wigs for people who have lost their hair while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Miss Campbell said she took on the challenge to inspire her students and to show them anything was possible.

If it is for a good cause and you believe in the goodness, do it . . . that’s her message for them.

“I was totally worried about losing my hair but I feel better knowing our hair is going to make wigs.”

Miss Campbell said the hair-shaving experience was about celebrating life.

“It is about having a good laugh and to show bald is beautiful. So are our wonderful friends and relations who are battling the cancer taniwha.

“I would like to think the money we fundraised might one day help find a cure for cancer.”

CanTeen East Cape Branch youth worker Lianne Jenkins said the Elgin community could be proud of their efforts to help raise funds and awareness for CanTeen — the organisation that helps young people and siblings deal with the cancer journey.

The CanTeen Bandanna Challenge ends on Sunday and the $10,000 fundraising target for the branch is well on its way to being reached.
