Bakers do a wicked double
MULTISPORT - NEAR-perfect conditions at Tolaga Bay scorned the forecast for the final race of the Avanti Plus Maintrax Wicked Winter Duathlon Series . . . cool enough, with a wind to help make the cycle and kayak legs more fun.

The long-course run went through the dunes, past the surf club, golf course and pub. Tayler Reid, surviving a spectacular tumble on the beach, tagged Shane Clapperton for the cycle (Team TSJ,) ahead of James Hilliard, Andy Baker and Mark van Wyk. Nan Baker led the women, with Sara Ngarimu-Tuhaka flying the flag for the host town.

The bike took in the wharf and Tauwhareparae Road, with a rising wind. One more run and Andy Baker’s strength won through in 1:27.19, ahead of Van Wyk and Hilliard third — only a couple of minutes over all three — with a gap back to Hans van Kregten and Mark Joblin.

Nan Baker finished in 1:35:14 for a husband-wife double. Jackie Clapperton did the final run for Team TSJ.

Ian Hughes and Dave Conway contested the multisport option, with Hughes holding his run lead into the cycle and kayak legs.

Michael Webb led the way into the short course until Nicky Solomon mowed everyone down on the bike leg, leaving Kyla Morgan, Rebecca Watson and Paul Naske in her wake. Webb caught up on the final run but missed the turn-off, allowing Soloman to win by four minutes, with Morgan ahead of Watson and Naske.

Kyla Solomon won the under-7 girls’ race around the school fields and Alex Davies the boys’ race, ahead of Angus Baker and Harry Naske.

Ella van Kregten streaked away from all-comers in the 8-13yrs race, heading home Phoebe Naske and Krystal Jones, with Liam Mackay first boy from Oli Davies.

The winter series is over until the club’s ice-breaker for the triathlon season.
