Mulligan hat-trick lays the platform
HOCKEY - A HAT-TRICK from Julie Mulligan laid the platform for a 5-0 win by YMP A against arch-rivals GMC at Harry Barker Reserve on Saturday.

It meant YMP A gained not only the top spot of the second round in the premier women’s hockey competition but also the mental edge before the weekend’s semifinal.

YMP A took control from the start and maintained dominance inside the GMC circle.

Mulligan’s hat-trick showed why she has been one of YMP’s most consistent goalscorers. Younger teammates Awhi Rickard and Nicole Torrie grabbed the other goals.

GMC will have a bit of work to do at training this week and could be considered underdogs for this weekend’s semifinal.

Gisborne Girls’ High School got back on track to defend their premier women’s title with a 5-0 victory over Paikea.

The formula is simple from here on for the Girls’ High side — every game is a must-win proposition, and they have the ability to win them all.

Kodi Campbell (two), Nikita Ngatai, Toni Halley and Briar Wilkie all got on the scoresheet.

Paikea have struggled in the past few weeks, with key players being absent. They play Girls’ High in a sudden-death semifinal at the weekend and will use the experience of this loss to look for ways of combating the Girls’ High attack.

Te Aowera finished the second round with a perfect record against the other senior sides. On Saturday they beat High School Old Girls 1-0.

Te Aowera have shown throughout the season that they can dig in when required in the tough games.

HSOG dominated the early stages of the game and will rue their missed opportunities.

Te Aowera are one win away from a finals appearance, while HSOG will play a sudden-death semifinal this weekend.

Sharon Bramwell scored four goals for GMC Gold as they sent the other senior sides a message with a solid 6-0 victory over Ngatapa.

Bramwell showed why she is still one of the legends of local women’s hockey, while the experience of Ngaio Haenga and Heather Arnold showed as they grabbed the other two goals.

Ngatapa struggled to get numbers for the game but were outclassed by a slick GMC side.

The win set up GMC Gold to take on Te Aowera for the direct route to a finals appearance.

Waituhi made it two wins from two games in the senior reserve section with a 1-0 victory over YMP B.

The result was a turnaround from their last clash and it was Waituhi’s Chakhan Hawea that had their supporters jumping for joy.

YMP B will look to turn the tables again before the season ends.

Eastland Traders Lytton Old Boys A kept their unbeaten run intact as they outclassed arch-rivals YMP A 4-0.

It wouldn’t be an LOB A win without a Toby Harris goal but Harris’s teammates John Hockey, Derek Peach and George Searle made sure the goals were shared around.

The win means the Traders go into the semis as favourites but YMP A will not be pressing the panic button. They are the type of side who can come back from a loss and tear up the form book.

YMP A will welcome a full complement of players for another clash with the Traders this weekend.

Waituhi finished off the second round in third place with a 6-1 victory over LOB Prems.

It took Waituhi three minutes to get on the scoreboard, and they went into the break with a 2-1 lead. Waituhi put the foot down late in the second half to pile on the goals.

Tyronne Mohi and Hone Pewhairangi grabbed two each, and Ruka Hohepa and Hoera Mohi completed the scoring.

Waituhi’s supporters were out in force and outnumbered the Prems supporters by 20 to one.

The Prems stayed in the game until halftime through a Mike Ducros goal. The game also brought about the loss to Prems of Wade Manson, with a season-ending rib injury.

LOB Masters and Caledonia went blow for blow in the first half and were level, 2-2, at the break.

Caledonia’s Richard McDermott scored a double and Masters’ Kim Smith and Boycie Tamanui scored one each.

Caledonia had the opportunities midway through the second half, then late in the game the Masters turned defence into attack, but neither side could score again and it ended 2-2.
