Inspiring story of bravery played out on tour of schools
GISBORNE and East Coast children were treated to a national show on tour about bravery, courage and determination.

Taki Rua performers Puriri Koria and Raiha Moetara, from Manutuke, and Amanda Noblett from Waikato brought their kapa haka, singing, dancing and acting skills to entertain Ruatoria, Hicks Bay and Gisborne schoolchildren this week.

Production writer and director Teina Moetara said Taki Rua provided theatrical arts to out-of-reach areas and quality exposure to te reo Maori.

The story is of Kahe Te Rau o Te Rangi who swam from Kapiti Island to Te Uruhi on the mainland in the middle of the night, and with a baby on her back, to warn her people of an imminent attack by a warring party.

“The narrative of the show follows Kahe’s intimate journey and sacrifice in order to save her people. Heeding the warning from a prophetic dream, signalling an invading force from the south planning to attack her Kapiti Island homeland, she prepares for her only choice — to take her baby and swim across one of the country’s swiftest channels towards the safety of the mainland.”

The Taki Rua troupe’s national tour started on July 23 and will run until September 9.
