League player dies on field
THE Gisborne and Wairoa rugby league communities are in shock after the sudden death of a Wairoa player during a match at Awapuni Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Jerry Mason, 33, collapsed on the field at around 1.35pm while playing for Tapuae Taniwha against Repongaere Eels during a Gisborne rugby league club match.

Match officials said Mr Mason had just returned to the field from being on the reserves bench and was running back into the line of play when he collapsed and began convulsing.

The game was stopped and bystanders began performing CPR until a St John ambulance arrived.

Paramedics were unable to revive Mr Mason and he was pronounced dead on the field.

Another match scheduled to play after the Tapuae and Eels game was also called off.

Before Mr Mason was taken from the field, teammates and other players performed a haka to the fallen player.

The Gisborne Tairawhiti Rugby League Board has expressed its condolences and has organised a bus for Gisborne people to attend Mr Mason’s tangi in Wairoa.

“The GTRL board and the greater rugby league community’s thoughts are with the Mason family and the Tapuae club for their loss,” a spokesman said.
