Having a blast at Waioeka Gorge slip
Saturday, July 07, 2012
WORK on the Waioeka Gorge slip is progressing well after blasting with explosives shifted a lot of slip debris.
Blasting of some areas on the upper slope two weeks ago helped dislodge mass material sitting around the edge of the slip face on the Opotiki side.
Around 5000 cubic metres of material were dislodged from the blasting and heavy rain the same week.
The majority of the debris is sitting on the bench in the middle of the slope just above the area known as the “whale-back”.
A digger is helping speed up the removal of this material by pushing it out from the bench down a chute so it can be collected at the base and loaded on to trucks for disposal.
This mass slip material is expected to be removed within the next two weeks, says New Zealand Transport Association spokeswoman Glenda Dobbyn.
Once this material has been removed, the slip face will be surveyed again by geologists to determine what excess material still needs to come down so the face is fully stabilised.
