Desperate need for SPCA ‘vollies’
VOLUNTEERS are “desperately” needed to help out at the Matawhero SPCA.

The SPCA’s haven for abandoned and unwanted kittens, cats, puppies and dogs relies on public support but is short of funds and help, and needs the community’s support to keep going.

Animal welfare manager Lesley Lousich said helpers would only be required to work for a maximum of four hours when they could.

“We can work around the volunteer and we need all sorts — from people who are happy to help out with the animals in the morning to fosterers happy to have animals in their home, and people to help with our off-site adoptions.”

Every fortnight on a Saturday or Sunday, animals are taken into the community to hopefully get adopted and people are needed to look after them.

Mrs Lousich said they were also desperate for weekend volunteers who could give them three to four hours at a time.

They were needed for general cleaning at the premises but there was also a need for some administration support.

Volunteers must be 15 years of age or over. Younger people are welcome if they are accompanied by an adult.

Save our strays is a new programme being developed by the centre to help with the treatment of injured animals.

Mrs Lousich says more often than not it is the SPCA that comes to the rescue of a cat or a dog which has been run over but has no home.

“We normally pick them up and take care of them but we are getting quite short of funds.”

Blankets were also needed to help keep the dogs warm during the winter nights. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the Matawhero haven by the Colosseum.

Mrs Lousich said they were grateful for blankets received during a recent collection call by Campion College but more were needed.

blanket and a cuddle: The cold winter nights are hard for dogs too and the Gisborne SPCA is asking for donations of blankets to help keep them warm. Volunteers and financial support are also required for the haven, which looks after the district’s unwanted animals. Helpers are only required for a maximum of four hours at a time.
