TURIHAUA Angus stud has raised the stakes for buyers after a New Zealand record price for the year — $42,000 — was paid for a bull at its angus stud bull sale last night.
The sale was set alight with intense bidding for Turihaua F61, the fifth bull to be auctioned. It is a son of Turihaua Crumble and is a low birth weight bull. The sire’s dam (mother) has produced seven natural calves and 14 progeny in an embryo transfer programme.
The previous highest price this year was $39,000 although not for an Angus bull, said auctioneer Bruce Orr.
Before the Turihaua sale, $36,000 had been paid for an Angus bull.
Prices at yesterday’s sale ranged from $4500 to $42,000, with an average of $8734.
Turihaua stud master Hamish Williams said it had been an outstanding sale. It was somewhat nerve-racking but the support shown by the buyers was hugely appreciated.
Cricklewood stud owners John and Jan Bayly paid the record price. Mr Bayly said the bull was an outstanding sire in the catalogue and would be particularly good for their stud breeding programme.
The money paid supported the bull’s value, he said.
Several buyers each bought between six to eight sires.
A purchaser from Ohakune, who has been attending the Turihaua Angus sale since 1986, bought six bulls yesterday.
At the start of the sale Mr Williams outlined the changes for Turihaua next season.
“We are looking to increase the number of sires offered for sale each year and will be selling our commercial cow herd to give sufficient area for the stud cows.”
He told the packed rostrum of buyers he would be interested in buying back young steers with Turihaua blood-lines to replace the cow herd.
