Brawl ends game, clubs to face judiciary
WAIKOHU and GMC rugby clubs face a judicial committee after their senior one rugby match was called off because of a brawl on Saturday.

Referee Paul Brown blew the whistle on the game at Te Karaka with 20 minutes remaining, said Poverty Bay RFU chief executive Doug Wilcox.

“My understanding is that it began when two players were sent to the sin bin and they continued their altercation on the sideline.”

The score was 13-8 in GMC’s favour when the referee ended the game.

A final result was yet to be determined, said Mr Wilcox.

“I’m very disappointed that this happened,” he said.

“The PBRFU does not condone fighting and we strive to create a safe family environment.

“We are part of the ‘It’s not OK’ anti-violence campaign and are trying to promote all games as alcohol-free and smoke-free.”

The judicial committee will meet tomorrow night with representatives from both teams called to be present, under a process based on regulations followed by the PBRFU and New Zealand Rugby Union.

“Whatever decision the judiciary makes, we will support,” said Mr Wilcox.
