Scholarship results out today
New Zealand Scholarship examination results are available today and some students are confident about passing . . . but also a little nervous.

Campion College Year 13 student Natacha Sanguinetti sat scholarship French.

“I found it quite easy but I don’t want to say too much, just in case I don’t pass.”

Maggie White sat scholarship drama and she had the option of sitting it again this year if she didn’t pass because she was only Year 12 when she did the exam.

“I think it went pretty well. I really enjoyed it, regardless of getting it or not.”

The results of about 9000 students were posted yesterday, and candidates can check results on the NZQA website from this afternoon.

For the 8986 students who participated in New Zealand Scholarship exams, 2065 students will receive a total of more than $3.4 million over the next three years. This will range from a one-off payment of $500 for a single subject pass, to $30,000 over three years for a Premier Award.

Former Campion College student Cameron Huberts, who sat scholarship classical studies, history and geography, will be crossing his fingers he is successful as he begins Bachelor of Science in geography at Victoria at the end of the month.

“I’m nervous, I suppose,” he said.

“I did relatively well in one, but I’m not sure about the others.”

Eight students nationwide receive the Premier Award.

Fourty-nine candidates will receive the Outstanding Scholar Award, worth $5000 a year for three years.

NZQA Technical Overview Group Assessment chairman Professor Gary Hawke said the scholarship process was “extremely robust”.

“The group was again, this year, very impressed with the truly outstanding performances of the Premier Award winners

“It is clear that scholarship continues to have a positive effect in driving motivation for students across all subjects.”

• New Zealand Scholarship results for 2009: 8986 students participated, 1784 gained a single subject award, 180 gained scholarship in three or more subjects, 49 got an Outstanding Scholar Award and eight a Premier Award.
