The management and staff of The Gisborne Herald have always loved the challenge of bringing world, national and local news and sport to our readers.
Successive generations of the Muir family have ensured the daily newspaper moved with the times and were always quick to take on the challenges of new technology.
Newspapers will survive and here at The Gisborne Herald we will be keeping up with the world news as well as providing readers with all things of importance locally.
You won’t get that kind of coverage anywhere else!
But, like our readers, we also think television has certainly enriched our lives and we agree with the sentiments expressed by a regular letter-writer “Yorick” that it can be particularly interesting to followers of all sports.
She writes: “Congratulations to all sponsors of minor sports and individuals for providing me with a wonderful summer of Sky TV. Being housebound, the summer is difficult and a greater variety of programmes which involve people’s activities make it easier in the ageing process.
“For so long ‘Rugby Racing and Beer’ has been the theme for New Zealand and has been accompanied by perks. In the past few years minor sports, individuals and world under-21 activities have been brought to our notice through Sky.
“I have learnt the fundamentals of fishing, snooker, darts, surfing, swimming, table tennis, badminton, ten pin bowling and many others plus cricket, hockey, bowls (more generally understood by public). May sponsors for minor sports be congratulated. Keep it up! One day those you are helping will be professionals.
“Power malfunctions are a concern. A disaster for professional sport! Power affects hospitals, life machines, essential for anyone with a disability. People should have priority.
“The cost of power is the same to whoever or whatever. Sport is essential for survival in this chaotic world. Choose well, play fair. The young grow up and can do with sponsorship, so the old can enjoy life.”
Good stuff, Yorick!
