Nuhaka horse trek debut

In February the Nuhaka Domain Board is holding its first-ever public horse trek to raise money for the upkeep of the Nuhaka domain facilities – and if the trek proves to be a success, the organisers plan to make it an annual event. The horse trek will last two days – February 27-28, and bookings close February 12.

The first day will consist of an approximately eight-hour ride which will go through Moumoukai Station and will traverse bush and farmland and feature river crossings.

The highlight of the day will be reaching the summit of Moumoukai mountain, which will give stunning views of Mahia Peninsula.

The second day will consist of an approximately five-hour ride along the Nuhaka coastline.

If people want to only take part in one day, or even just part of a day, organisers say this would be fine.

The organisers say people of all ages are welcome, as long as children are accompanied by an adult rider who is willing to take responsibility for them.

People taking part should ensure their horses are fit enough to cover medium to steep hill country, while riders should be of intermediate level.

Camp will be based at the Nuhaka Domain with showers, toilets, meals and bar facilities, and entertainment all provided from Friday afternoon.

There will also be paddocks and wash-down facilities for the horses.

Organiser Linda Kerr said they had capped entries to 30 outside riders to ensure it remained a pleasurably casual ride, so bookings were essential.
