GISBORNE-born Sarah Mason was knocked out of the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship at Piha Beach this morning.
The 14-year-old finished fourth in her under-18 girls repechage eight heat — the top two advancing — giving her a placing of eighth overall.
Mason totalled 10.76 out of a possible 20 for her best two waves. American Lakey Peterson won with 16.34 from Hawaiian Aless Quizon 15.80 and France’s Canelle Bulard 12.50.
Mason got into surfing while growing up in Gisborne. She is the younger sister of World Qualifying Series competitor Airini. The family shifted to the Gold Coast five years ago and now lives at Cabarita Beach, New South Wales.
Her departure means Ben Poulter of Raglan is the only Kiwi remaining in the championship, which finishes today.
He was third in his u16 boys’ main draw round six heat this morning with 12.02, just 0.10 behind second-placed Hiroti Arai of Japan. Poulter dropped to the final repechage heat and needed to finish in the top two to make the four-man final.
