The past month has had its moments.
With the end of Movember in sight, Francis Yates Builders have been preening and pruning — and for some furiously trying to grow — moustaches in support of men’s health.
The builders raised just under $1000 for men’s health with their mo-growing efforts, said Mr Yates, whose own mo looks suspiciously false.
“I didn’t grow one. All I would be able to grow is a bit of bumfluff . . . but I was in charge of the money,” said Mr Yates.
“It has been a fun month. The banter that has gone on around the town with every ones mos has been really good.
“The boys have had lots of comments and a lot of support everywhere we go, from timber merchant to service stations and dairies. Even if it is people saying ‘oh, are you trying to grow a mo?’ ”
The builders were unanimous as to whose mo was the best — Bruce Knight — and Mr Yates said a few of the guys would definitely be entering the official mo competition.
Movember is about raising awareness around prostate cancer and depression in men, and encouraging men to talk about their health.
Money raised from last year’s Movember was used in Gisborne to run a men’s health seminar and for other schemes promoting men’s health.
“They all know what the month is about and why they are growing a mo, that’s for sure.
“It’s good,” said Mr Yates.
Last year over $4 million was raised across New Zealand during Movember.
